SOLIDARITY WITH JOLLIBEE WORKERS IN THE U.S. AND THE PHILIPPINES!
Tambisan sa Sining stands in militant solidarity with the 9 dismissed workers of Jollibee Journal Square in New Jersey, and the local and international workers of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) who continue to suffer exploitative labor. We likewise condemn the union-busting modus of Jollibee Journal Square which took the jobs of 9 workers, the oppressive labor practices of JFC, which it has long enforced, and its hypocrisy of advertising values of caring and camaraderie while engaging in labor-only contracting (LOC) and keeping laborers in dismal working conditions.
In late 2022, workers of Jollibee Journal Square in New Jersey sought wage increase, holiday pay, and workplace improvements through a letter addressed to the management. 90% of the branch employees had signed the campaign by January 2023. However, before this petition could be submitted and a legitimate bargaining between employees and management be initiated, the Jollibee branch hurriedly laid off 9 employees, citing cost-saving as an alibi.
This is clearly an attempt to stifle the workers’ demands, and a blatant violation of their freedom of association (FOA), as ratified by 187 member states of the International Labor Organization (ILO), including the USA.
Amidst a global economic crisis, a multi-billion dollar company has made 9 people jobless, and has denied 9 families with additional means of survival.
SA JOLLIBEE, BEEDA ANG PANANAMANTALA
To rake in massive profits, JFC has historically violated domestic and international labor regulations. In 2018, Jollibee workers in the Philippines waged a campaign to regularize more than 14,000 JFC workers in the country employed via LOC, an illegal form of employment. In April of the same year, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) had ordered the corporation to regularize around 6,500 contractual employees. JFC not only ignored DOLE’s order, it also proceeded to dismiss nearly 400 workers.
As of 2021, the JFC has 5,933 restaurants globally, with a revenue of USD 2.7 billion.
JOLLIBEE WORKERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE!
We call on the Jollibee workers across the globe to unite and demand what is rightfully yours – living wages, job security, humane working conditions, and the right to organize. We call on the artists, creatives, and cultural workers to stand in militant solidarity with the workers, and amplify the call to reinstate the 9 illegally-dismissed Jollibee Journal Square workers, implement wage increase and proper compensation, and end the JFC's practice of labor-only contracting.
